This week we met up with Sarah Burrow, manager of the new mezze-style restaurant Starters and Puds on Shakespeare Street in Newcastle City centre. As this is a family-run business, Sarah, 25, has been working hard to ensure everything was perfect in time for the launch. Though Sarah is a self confessed shopaholic, she has had no time to update her wardrobe for summer. We decided that this had to be rectified straightaway.
IT STARTED as a small dress shop and a gun store in a Stockholm suburb, inspired by cheap post-war American fashion. Almost 50 years later, the fashion company HM is poised to overtake Marks Spencer as Europes largest clothing retailer. It is all a far cry from 1947 when a humble salesman called Erling Persson went to America and was impressed by the low-cost clothing stores he saw there. He returned to Sweden and opened a shop called Hennes (meaning “hers” in Swedish) in the Stockholm suburb, with the slogan “fashion and quality at the best price”. The company grew slowly through the 1960s and opened its first store in Britain in 1978. It had a reputation for providing good, cheap, if slightly unadventurous, high street fashion. But in 1998, Mr Persson handed control of the company over to his son Stefan, and suddenly the profile of HM began to rise through word of mouth and increased mentions on the fashion pages of glossy magazines.

1 This justifiably popular Canadian mountain bike brand is one of the very best at handling tight and twisty singletrack - an attribute that is also handy when negotiating rush-hour traffic. Konas famous and much- copied steeply-sloping top tube offers acres of clearance between rider and bike, and makes for a frame with a small, tight geometry for quick acceleration and remarkable rigidity. Add some budget suspension forks and a decent gear setup, and the resulting ride is truly confidence-inspiring. It looks cool too, in all that Hawaiian-style livery.
Sir: I was surprised that in your countdown of the Ten Best Bike Accessories (30 August) you didnt include the most essential and least used bicycle accessory ” a copy of the Highway Code. KEW, SURREY

Cars. Dir. John Lasseter. Released by Disney-Pixar. Featuring the voices of Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt, and Larry the Cable Guy. 116 min. Video release: Nov. 2006. This film is visually entrancing (the sequences set at the track are sufficiently stimulating, chaotic and noisy with furious angle cuts to engage your basic attention-deficient kid) and often slyly comic (because there are only cars in this world, tractors do the work of farm animals and one popular prank is tipping over tractors) and generously garnished with characters that can be personable (the wonderfully naive beat-up pick up voiced by Larry the Cable Guy is as endearing and appealing as any Disney character since Thumper). But it lectures, often heavy handedly, about a lost America, dated here to the mid-1950s, a world of caring neighbors, a slow down, small-town world of simple pleasures like a slow drive in the country, where love was expressed in batted eyes and stammering speech. Granted that 1950s is a confection of Hollywood and perhaps it is an exercise in pointless nostalgia to mourn something that never really existed, it works here. When Lightning McQueen, the showboat hot-shot race car (Owen Wilson), loses a big race (his daredevil antics on the track cost him the victory) and decides brashly to eschew his racing team to head alone to the season-ending showdown race for the Piston Cup, he gets lost on a stretch of back highway, the mythic Route 66, in the deserts somewhere on the way to California. He ends up in a lonesome town, Radiator Springs, itself a cross of intersections bypassed long ago by the interstate and now settling into dust. When Lightning ends up impounded in the town and then sentenced by an unforgiving old-timer judge (Paul Newman) to community service–he must repave the stretch of broken-down highway his race car has damaged–the young kid comes to understand, slowly, the simple values that his media-driven celebrity lifestyle and virtually impenetrable narcissism have never shown him: friendship, trust, honesty. Happily, the judge turns out to be himself a relic of past racing glory and with his help and his patient (although wonderfully gruff) instruction the kid learns a thing or two about handling cars. When Lightning returns to race, he does so richly educated in the importance of tradition, the value of modesty, and the sterling quality of friendship. I would not dream of spoiling the end of the film, but in the end we learn, as with all truly significant sports films, what happens in competition pales next to the significance of what happens off field. With Lightnings newfound sensitivity, the town finds its way to a renaissance that is as believable as it is heartwarming.

Law of Attraction
Perhaps youve already seen a movie called “The Secret.” Perhaps a friend invited you over to watch it and together you rolled your eyes at how hokey it was. And then perhaps you went home, mesmerized by its message, vowing to change your life. Through word-of-mouth and online viral marketing — and without a penny spent on advertising — 750,000 copies of “The Secret” DVD have been sold, plus nearly a million books based on the movie, and a million copies of the soundtrack. The numbers are likely to rise following an hour devoted to “The Secret” on Oprah earlier this week. The gist of “The Secret” and The Law of Attraction is this: Our thoughts create emotions that have vibrations that attract similar vibrations; so whatever we focus on, good or bad, we draw to us; whatever we want — if we think, feel and act upon it — the universe will provide.

No News The much-talked-about devolution of government responsibilities from Washington, D.C., to the states should make the nations statehouses political centers of gravity, but Americas newspapers are missing the story-on purpose. Writing in the American Journalism Review, the studys authors contend that just 513 newspaper reporters and 113 wire service reporters cover state government full time. The authors note that more than 3,000 media credentials were issued for the last Super Bowl.
UN passes declaration favoring human cloning banThe United Nations recently passed a declaration opposing all forms of human cloning as “incompatible with human dignity.” This declaration was supported by the United States and led by Costa Rica. The declaration passed in the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Sixth Committee by a vote of 84 in favor, 34 against, and 37 abstaining. The declaration does not have the force of international law, though it does make a strong international statement against all forms of human cloning, including research cloning.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

In response to Matthew Youngs editorial in the last issue of The Diabetic Foot: When is a diabetes specialist podiatrist not a DSP?, it is most encouraging to note the level of support from diabetes consultants who are advocates for podiatry throughout the UK. The role of the podiatrist in the multiprofessional diabetes team is well recognised and the valuable contribution of the podiatrist to diabetic foot care has been measured and reported in the literature. With the publication of the International Consensus Document (IWGDF, 1999) and, more recently, the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network for Diabetes (SIGN, 2001) and the National Service Framework far Diabetes: Standards (DoH, 2001 a, b), the standards for diabetic foot care are now clear and universally available. To achieve these standards, the following must be available to deliver the care that patients deserve:
The program was started a few years ago. Safeco was interested in getting into the medical malpractice market and saw podiatry as a good market. As Doman explains, “Podiatrists have been treated by many malpractice carriers as outside the traditional medical professions. Yet they have an equivalent type of education. They get a DPM (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine) after college and are board certified.” Safeco was approached by an agent who had a program, so they put together a product. Doman goes on to point out that the Podiatrists Program has extremely broad coverage, including: Protection for the DPMs professional corporation or partnership, employees and locum tenens (substitute physician) while serving on the DPMs behalf.
The University of Utah is limiting the practice of podiatrists in its medical facilities, severely restricting their ability to perform surgeries and ending their existing adjunct faculty appointments. University Health Care officials say the changes and transfer of oversight from the department of surgery to the department of orthopaedics are important for the U.s educational and treatment mission. In February, the podiatrists were notified that their specialty would be moved from surgery oversight to orthopaedics. Signed by the chairmen of surgery, Dr. Sean J. Mulvihill, and orthopaedics, Dr. Charles Saltzman, the letters said each podiatrist could apply for adjunct faculty appointments through orthopaedics, but their scope of practice would be limited to soft tissue, nail and skin surgery and non-surgical foot care.

Philip Schweiger asks whether the prolife tent can be enlarged to include other social issues, such as health insurance and immigration (Kansas Matters, October 20). As one who votes prolife, I think it can, but Schweiger puts the cart before the horse. The question is not whether prolife voters support social issues. They can, they have, and they will in the future. More importantly, though, will the social-justice tent builders oppose abortion? All too often, it seems, prolife plus activists just want to enlist prolife voters in their particular cause, without coming out against abortion themselves. Erlanger, Ky.

People often ask me, “how relevant is the catwalk to the clothes most people actually wear?” As the spring/summer 97 round of shows gets under way, with London officially starting tomorrow, Milan next, then Paris and New York, the answer is that without designer level fashion, high street fashion would have no impetus to move forward. The clothes you see here are all available at a shopping centre or street near you, at prices that most people can afford. Yet they all owe their origins to the catwalks. Occasionally, a dress or shirt will be shamelessly copied. But on the whole, the high street looks to the catwalk for inspiration - for a mood or a look, if not an exact pocket detail or neckline. This autumn, the influence of the catwalks on the high street is as pronounced as ever. Walk into Miss Selfridge and you will be hit by a capsule collection of brightly coloured, zig-zag-patterned knitwear, a reflection of the Italian designer Missonis resurgence as a label to die for. Missonis knits are hand-crafted, life investment pieces with, of course, price tags to match. But if you want the look without the quality or the third mortgage, a cropped cotton/viscose Missoni-look sweater for pounds 25 is an effective one-season buy, guaranteed to update last winters wardrobe. Likewise, Gucci, the Italian label that has recently been resurrected from being synonymous with Eighties status dressing to the ultimate in high fashion. There is no suggestion that anyone would mistake the Gucci “look” for the real thing. A pure cashmere coat by the esteemed label is manufactured and tailored with absolute precision. To compare it with a coat of roughly similar design by Warehouse would be like comparing a Lamborghini to a Vauxhall Cavalier. Both are perfectly functional cars, but there the similarity ends. You get what you pay for. Gucci is in a league of its own; and the cream, pure wool, fake-fur-trimmed coat you see here is worth every one of its pounds 160. Another strong look for this autumn comes from New York and Ralph Lauren. The designer, who opens a flagship store in London later this year, took his influence from a street in London: Savile Row. When Claudia Schiffer walked down the runway in a midnight blue velvet tailored suit with shirt and gold tie, scores of fashion editors imagined themselves in her place. Of course, Ralph Lauren does not hold a monopoly on velvet suits. And Next might just as easily taken their inspiration from the Row as well. While the designer version can be altered to look as though it was made for you, out of the most luxurious silk velvet, Nexts suit costs a fraction of the price, at under pounds 150. And of course, good old mail order stalwart Racing Green has come up with the perfect fitted shirt, and its as much of a classic as the Ralph Lauren de luxe original. Back in Milan, Prada has been setting the pace, along with Gucci, for the past few seasons. The key look is minimal styling with quirky Seventies house-beautiful prints. For the Prada aficionado, there is no point if the label is not hand-sewn with the revered Milanese logo. But for anyone who just happens to like the abstract print look, there are numerous hommages on the high street. The best comes from Jane Norman, a family-run business owned by two sisters. They pride themselves on their awareness of catwalk trends. For them, the catwalk is extremely important. They respond to supplying and satisfying public demand, giving increasingly trend aware women catwalk looks at high street prices. The shirt dress pictured here hits just the right note. The transition from catwalk to high street does not always happen within the same season. Some trends take a while to filter through. The tiger- print kaftans from Dolce e Gabbanas last collection are no longer available in their Sloane Street store, but they have only just made their mark on the shop floor at the French chain Kookai. And for evening, the cowl- necked tiger-print tunic is a good buy, and will make as much of a statement across a crowded bar as the designer version. Real Estate Brokers with the SRES designation help seniors make wise decisions about selling their home, buying rental property, managing the capital gains and estate tax implications of owning real estate, obtaining a reverse mortgage, moving to a senior community and other issues. The designation was introduced in 1997 and is nationally recognized.
Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.

Briefs Spiked heels (some over an inch and a half higher than previous years) are coming back into style much to the distress of podiatrists. Many women like wearing the spiked heels because they can make legs look longer and thinner. However, some of these shoes can cause problems, according to an article in a recent issue of Ladies Home Journal magazine.

The incentive measures are to develop activities in support of the European Employment Strategy adopted at the Lisbon European Council. Funding will be given to projects that will contribute to the development of a coordinated strategy for employment through analyses, monitoring of labour market policies and support actions carried out by the participating countries. Among the goals set out for the programme are identification of best practices and promotion of exchanges and transfers of information and experience, including ways of cooperating with the social partners and relevant local and regional authorities. The programme is also to contribute to the follow-up and evaluation of the European Employment Strategy. The EEA EFTA States also participate in the European Employment Service (EURES) (see the section below on Community services and systems).
Employment Job growth is beginning to keep pace with the regions expanding working-age population.
Total Employment Rate An important aspect of economic performance is how the resources are utilised, human capital being societys main resource. Consequently, the employment rate and its development are crucial both for economic growth and social cohesion. The Lisbon European Council stated that more and better jobs should be created and the overall target was to increase the employment rate to 70% by 2010. An intermediate goal for the employment rate was to reach 67% by January 2005. In addition, the re-launching of the Lisbon Strategy by the European Council in 2005, following the mid-term review of the Strategy, has put even more importance and focus on growth and employment.

All aspects of the biology of tent caterpillars are covered in great depth, including systematics, distribution, anatomy, physiology, survival strategies, population dynamics, economic impact, and modern and historical control methods. A chapter on maintaining colonies and ideas for classroom studies is also provided. Well-illustrated with numerous black and white photographs and line drawings and a few color plates. An extensive reference list is also included. Probably too technical for most, but an important and valuable reference for those with a serious interest in tent caterpillars or caterpillar biology. Why travel by tractor when you can drive a Ferrari? Richard Moore discovers why people are giving up mountain biking in favour of its road-based relation For more than 15 years, ever since the American Gary Fisher introduced the radical new concept of the mountain bike to the world, the humble road machine has lived very much in the shadow of its knobbly-tyred cousin. But in the last couple of years, that trend has been bucked with road bikes, particularly those at the higher end of the market, making a spectacular comeback. Perhaps it is because people have realised that their mountain bikes, bought in good faith and with such admirable intentions, havent actually seen too many mountains. Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Or maybe not. Road cycling has always had a dedicated following, with many attracted by the glamour of racing. But now there are an increasing number of non-competitive road rides, aimed at the many thousands who like a physical challenge without the competitive edge, and enjoy the camaraderie and the experience of riding in a group.

The centre was announced in second place of its group at an awards ceremony in Athens last week, narrowly missing out on one of the prestigious top-five grand finalist positions. Van centre manager, David Gordge, said: To have come so close to winning after being open for such a short time is a credit to the whole team here, and we are very proud of our achievements. We are a little disappointed not to have scooped the top prize, but having been in competition with other van centres that have been in operation for many years, we are really pleased to have finished in the top 10 overall and we plan to improve next year.

All the major brands, from Nikon to Canon and Pentax to Sony, offer point-and-shoot digital cameras. Even Hewlett-Packard has jumped on the digital camera bandwagon. According to Justin Porterfield, manager of the ZCMI Center Inkleys, the cost ranges from $100 to $1,000. One in the $500-price range will get you near single lens reflex quality, he said. According to Allred, most digital cameras have a small LCD monitor on the back that is ideal for composing and reviewing images. It also lets you magnify the images to check for accurate focus and small details. Most digital cameras use compact flash type I memory cards that allow easy downloading to a computer or printer through a USB port on the camera. This allows easy transmission of photographic data to a PC or Mac. Most digital cameras can record movies in AVI format with a duration of up to 30 seconds. Such as waking up even further away in the opposite direction. But what happens when you miss the last train altogether? A couple of Leeds brokers in this predicament in London - not wanting to pay rip-off hotel prices - just went walk– about round the town. Apart from learning that the Embankment is not the best place to be at four oclock in the morning, they recall the West End was reasonably populated by normal people, even at that time. They sum up the experience as reasonably enjoyable, but admit next time they will probably just stump up the hotel money. The only time I was similarly stranded was during the Great Hurricane of 1990. Having spent the day ensconced in a windowless room in the Charing Cross Hotel with representatives of various insurance companies - and what a suitably disparaging collective noun that cries out for - it was not until the gathering broke up around 4pm that it was realised something was up. There were no trains, at least to my neck of the woods, and with uncanny reaction I marched straight back to the hotel to book not a room, but a suite. I fully expected the enforced return of most of my colleagues, so plenty of floor space would be needed overnight.

Q. How important have drug chains become to the success of your camera business? BRIDDON: Chain drug stores remain a very important channel for both onetime-use and reloadable traditional film-based cameras. Moderately priced models that can be merchandised in a self-service manner are the primary volume producers. Chain drug stores have effectively managed the category to optimize both sales and margins. In general, they have reacted positively to the types of consumer offers and display options that we have presented. We have also been successful in encouraging consumers to make multiple purchases during key selling periods.

In situations where a single parent lives with someone outside of marriage, that person may be referred to as a co parent. Co-parent is also the name given to the partner in a homosexual relationship who shares the household and parenting responsibilities with a childs legal adoptive or biological parent.
The home which was owned by the family prior to a divorce or separation is referred to as the family home in many state laws. In court settlements of divorce and child custody issues, the sale of the family home may be prohibited as long as the minor children are still living there with the custodial parent. The sale of the home may be permitted (or required to pay the noncustodial parent his or her share of its value) if the custodial parent moves or remarries, or when the children leave home to establish their own residences.
The term extended family traditionally meant the biological relatives of a nuclear family; i.e., the parents, sisters, and brothers of both members of a married couple. It was sometimes used to refer to the people living in the household beyond the parents and children. As family relationships and configurations have become more complex due to divorce and remarriage, extended family has come to refer to all the biological, adoptive, step-, and half-relatives.
Government agencies and other statistics-gathering organizations use the term head of household to refer to the person who contributes more than half of the necessary support of the family members (other than the spouse); in common usage, the head of household is the person who provides primary financial support for the family.

An arched window situated just above the garden tub in this master bath left the space bathed in light but devoid of privacy. The homeowners-Elaine and Bob Jackson of Alpharetta, Georgia-wanted the sense of seclusion without losing the natural light and airy ambience provided by the window. A pair of custom-built louvered shutters proved perfect for the window. The Georgian Company, a local shutter shop, measured and designed the shutters for the Jacksons bath. “The critical part of interior shutters is the measuring and knowing how youre going to hang them,” says the shops owner, Bob Gard. “If theyre measured right, they fit like a glove,” he explains. The shutters mount inside the window frame. An outside mount is preferable if you want your windows to appear bigger or if you want to hide an unattractive one, while an inside mount gives a more finished appearance.

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.
Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Members will be asked to contribute ideas for a research agenda. The Cancer-Exercise Agenda: Opportunities in Applications Research

LaserLaser light is a special type of glow. In some materials, a photon passing near an atom with an outer-orbital electron in a high-energy state can, without being absorbed or deflected, stimulate that electron to drop to a lower energy state. The electron gives up its energy in the form of a photon that is of the same wavelength as the impinging photon, in phase with it, and traveling in the same direction. (To say that two photons are in phase means that, if they are considered as waves extended through space, their peaks and troughs are aligned; peak matches peak and trough matches trough.) Such light is termed coherent. Coherent light is rare in nature because atoms in most light sources (e.g., the Sun) are
